Member Spotlight(s) – De and Vince!

Vince and De enjoying the beautiful scenery on a trip to Alaska in 2015.
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
De Daltorio & Vince Sonson
We really can’t recall meeting De or Vince for the first time. Unassuming, quiet, and calm, they are not ones to cause a scene or make their presence known.  However, meet them and you feel like you’ve reconnected with your dearest childhood friends.  Members at PrimeTime since June 2012, it’s almost as if they’ve been around for much longer because of the comfortable, gentle, friendly nature that both of them possess.
Neither are strangers in a gym, especially Vince. Being an ex-athlete and having trained competitively for so long, Vince gravitates towards weight-lifting as his favorite form of exercise.  He has no trouble motivating himself to go to the gym and is a self-proclaimed gym- rat!  De, on the other hand, prefers outdoor activities – she loves swimming and biking – and her favorite way to get her sweat on indoors is hip-hop dancing, but Vince is often able to encourage her to join him for a gym workout.
Indoors or outside, both De and Vince realize the importance of exercise for more than just physical health.  Along with the physical benefits of working out, they realize the mental benefits, and state that “in our professional lives we are much sharper and more productive when our bodies are active, and we have better balance overall.”
When asked about their success at staying in shape over the years, De and Vince agree that
challenging themselves to step outside their comfort zones and try new classes and workout routines helps them avoid getting into a rut.  And what goes better with a great physical routine than clean eating habits . . . they have also put an emphasis on changing their dietary regimen as well.
Both De and Vince enjoy PrimeTime Fitness because of the family vibe that they feel when working out in the gym.  According to the two of them, “the staff genuinely cares about every person that walks through the door and that permeates the membership.  It’s cool to get to know the other trainers and members and honestly care about their progress.  That is not true of most gyms.”

Coming from Pittsburgh eight years ago, De and Vince left behind a climate and lifestyle that is not conducive to being physically fit.  Although neither of them were in poor condition when they moved to Charleston, their fitness has improved every year since they’ve been here, and they credit some of that to PrimeTime.  Vince has a personal goal on his birthday each year to honestly be able to say that he is in better shape than he was the previous year.  So far he hasn’t lied!

Fitting in exercise around professional responsibilities is a priority for both De and Vince.
De is the Director of Humane Education at the Charleston Animal Society and makes appearances in the schools as “Ms. De” with their three-legged dog Louie (one of their many pets – they have one other dog and three cats).  Vince, staying in the athletic field, is the Founder and CEO of Balance Position, a company dedicated to helping student-athletes achieve and maintain optimal mental health and wellness in order to realize their full potential.  When they are not working or working out,  De and Vince love going to the beach with the dogs, cruising around the island on their bikes and golf cart, and being outside and enjoying the beautiful island in general. Vince likes to work in the garden while De enjoys reading on the breezy porch bed at home.  They are advocates for preserving, restoring and renovating historic and old houses.  Although they are not natives to the Sullivan’s Island, they agree that the transformation of Sullivan’s Island over the last 8 years has been difficult to witness … but they say “it is still a tremendous place to live for sure.”
Interesting things to know about De and Vince:
They both hail from large immediate families – “Vince has six sisters, and De has two sisters and three brothers – she is the “Jan” of her family (if you don’t know who Jan is you are too young to be reading this).”
De traveled to Sydney, AU for an adventure after graduating from Indiana University of PA, and liked it so much she decided to stay there and live.   If they hadn’t kicked her out on account of her work Visa she would probably still be there!
Vince is a member of a secret society at Yale University – you can ask him about it but he won’t tell you.
“Go Pens!  Bring home Lord Stanley.  And Go Stillers.  Always.  This house bleeds black and gold!”
Words of Wisdom from De and Vince:
“Going to the gym will always feel like a chore if you are only motivated by external factors (needing to fit into a dress, wanting to look good for a reunion, etc.).   In order to really enjoy working out on a regular basis, you have to understand and believe in the importance of physical fitness in your overall happiness, well-being, and success towards your life goals.”
Well said, guys!  Keep spreading the word and walking the talk.  We love having you both with us at PrimeTime!

HIGH INTENSITY INTERVALS . . . OR STEADY STATE ENDURANCE?
One minute is all it takes . . . . or is it?
For many of us, the most pressing question about exercise is: How little can I get away with? The answer, according to a sophisticated new study of interval training, may be very, very little. In this new experiment, in fact, 60 seconds of strenuous exertion proved to be as successful at improving health and fitness as three-quarters of an hour of moderate exercise.
time_for_change.jpg
Read the New York Times article here . . . .
BUT we beg to differ. Yes, it’s true . . one minute bursts of high intensity (High Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT), can do wonders for your fitness.  However, according to research, this type of training should only make up approximately 20% of the total weekly training volume. The other 80% should focus on endurance based training, which increases aerobic capacity, relieves stress, increases power and improves fitness.
Shannon wins big after long hiatus!

You’ve probably seen Shannon Cagle in the cycling studio teaching Pedal and Praise, but she’s adding a new workout to her regimen.  Making a comeback after 28 years, Shannon has thrown a swim cap and goggles into her gym bag.
Attending the University of New Mexico on a swimming scholarship, Shannon graduated and went on to real-life adulthood with a career and a family.  Seven months ago, after twenty-eight years out of the pool, she decided to get her feet wet again and resumed doing something she had loved.
Of course, Shannon’s athleticism was easily awoken . . . she quickly made national cuts in five events for Masters (40 and older), and was added to a relay team.  In April Shannon traveled with the team to Greensboro, NC, where she scored in the top ten Masters in the nation in the 1000m freestyle, 100m freestyle, and 200m freestyle. The relay team came in 3rd nationwide in the 200m freestyle relay, breaking the state record by six seconds.

Despite the thrill of such a great accomplishment, perhaps the most inspiring moment of the weekend for Shannon was watching the seniors swim.  In awe of the 80- and 90-year olds that participated, Shannon was amazed at their dedication and perseverance.

We know that will be you, Shannon . . keep up the great work – you’re making us proud!

Karien is excited to become our newest certified personal trainer on staff!

NATIONAL HUMMUS DAY
Friday, May 13
SO easy and SO yummy, hummus with veggies or baked chips is a great snack and energy booster.  Try this recipe for a popular version of the Mediterranean appetizer:
Roasted Red Pepper Hummus
1/3 cup tahini (sesame seed paste)
1/4 cup chopped bottled roasted red bell peppers, rinsed and drained
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 garlic clove, minced
1 (15 1/2-ounce) can chickpeas, rinsed and drained

Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor and process until smooth. Add up to 1/4 cup water for desired consistency.
Crazy about hummus?  Click here to discover some great new varieties on the shelves in your local grocery store.
According to a study by the University of Utrecht, people that ride bikes live an average of six months longer than those that don’t ride bikes.
People For Bikes reports, “for every additional 75 minutes a week that you spend on a bike (that is, for every 11 minutes per day) you generally increase your lifespan by six months.”
It’s National Bike Month and people everywhere are taking advantage of the spring weather to explore the outdoors by bike.  Want to know more?  Check out https://nationalbikechallenge.org/ to challenge yourself, your friends, and your family to go by bike!
Just remember a few safety tips:
  • always wear a helmet
  • never wear headphones (if you must have your tunes, at least only use one earbud)
  • use front and rear lights if you are traveling early in the morning or at night
  • ride with traffic

Cammie and Alice get ready to head home after a great workout!
PrimeTimers Alice Botts and Cammie Camp walked to the old PrimeTime location three times a week for eleven years and hated to lose their outdoor warm-up.  Not missing a beat, they have adapted by biking regularly and note that it takes about the same amount of time to get to the gym – it’s only a 15-minute bike ride!  (According to the statistics above, the five months of biking to our new location 30 minutes three times a week gives them approximately 1800 minutes of biking . . . you do the math, but it’s surely added a few years to their lives!) They thoroughly enjoy the view and appreciate the short burst of effort as they cross the bridge. Cammie has even discovered the convenience of going the extra two minutes or so and biking to Publix or CVS, and says “now that I know how easy it is to bike to the store, I will do it all the time!”
Maria arrives at the gym for a late morning workout.
PrimeTimer Maria Schaeffer has also discovered the fun of biking to the gym from her Isle of Palms home. She says “everyone should do it, it’s sooo beautiful!”

Many others have taken up biking to and from the gym. Why not give it a try in May to celebrate National Bike Month!?

Breaking News:
PrimeTime Fitness has joined the Charleston Green Business Challenge!
The Green Business Challenge(GBC) promotes environmental sustainability while enhancing business profitability. Metro area businesses and institutions work to reduce their energy, water and waste and to buy local while saving money.
We’ve completed our inintial scorecard and didn’t do too poorly – with 25 points, we are at the “Sweetgrass” level.  You can see we have lots of room for improvement:
Sweetgrass 15-25 points
Palmetto 26-50 points
Magnolia 51-75 points
Live Oak 76-100+ points

We have outlined some preliminary goals in order to improve our sustainability, reduce waste, and cut down on energy and water usage.  But we can’t do it alone!

Bridge the Ashley Rally
Despite being approved in February 2014, the Legare Bridge Bike & Pedestrian Lane opening West Ashley to cyclists and pedestrians from downtown remains unbuilt. There is no safe way to walk or ride a bike over the Ashley River between West Ashley and the peninsula.

April ushers in the completion of Phase I: the installation of the car-centric additional left turn lane at Bee and Lockwood. Conversely, the Bike & Pedestrian Lane has inexplicably been delayed another 9 months. Since approval, this totals three unjust delays. We cannot allow another.

Gather on the steps of City Hall to urge the Mayor and members of City and County Council to expeditiously install the approved Bike & Pedestrian Lane in the name of safety and community connection.

Monday, April 11, 2016
6 p.m. @ Steps of City Hall (80 Broad Street)

Fill Out A Postcard – Be Heard!

Mayor Tecklenburg and members of City and County Council NEED to hear that you support the Legare Bridge Bike & Pedestrian Lane.
Throughout April, Charleston Moves is working to get 1,500 physical postcards in support of this project to our elected officials. We will double down with digital postcards, all of which will be delivered to the Mayor and members of City Council at the end of the month.
Tell your elected officials to stop playing politics with your safety! Our streets are public space; there’s no room for politics and unnecessary delays.

(Staff) Member Spotlight –
Andrew Dean
Welcome to the PrimeTime Team, Andrew!
PrimeTime Fitness has been fortunate to stumble upon Andrew Dean.  To spot Andrew is to meet him – his outgoing personality is energetic and enthusiastic, and he’s quick to introduce himself and offer a solid handshake. Andrew is certified through the International Sports & Fitness Trainers Association as a Personal Trainer, and holds an American Council on Exercise certification as a Holistic Fitness Coach.  Andrew’s interest in health and fitness started when he was a student athlete in the town of Bluffton, South Carolina. His high school football career eventually faded away due to his focus on wrestling.
During his wrestling years,  Andrew gained a lot of knowledge on not only physical training but also mental toughness and self-determination. He went on to become a two-time individual state wrestling champion and ranked in the top ten freestyle wrestlers in the country for his weight class. On a wrestling scholarship, he competed as an NCAA student athlete and helped coach the summer wrestling program while attending Limestone College with a major in Physical Education.  He transferred to the College of Charleston and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science.
If you’re looking for a great workout, Andrew’s the guy for you.  But don’t think that’s all you get . . . Andrew fully agrees with the other PrimeTime trainers that you can easily ruin a great workout with poor nutrition, and he’s eager to discuss proper fueling with his clients.  He believes in the total viewpoint of Holistic training where every client builds the physical body they desire through the development of physical fitness and natural nutrition, and after a workout with Andrew you’ll leave with lots of calories burned and spirits high!

National Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work

(out) Day
Thursday, April 28
Once a year parents are encouraged to bring their kids to work.  Help us celebrate National Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day by bringing them to the gym to workOUT!
“This national, public education program connects what children learn at school with the actual working world.  Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work helps girls and boys across the nation discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life.”
Of course, if you are reading this, you probably believe that along with balancing work and family, putting health and fitness first is a priority.   Here at PrimeTime Fitness we invite you to go one step further on this day, and bring your kids with you to workout. Allowing your daughters and sons – no matter what their ages – to experience your healthy lifestyle right along with you is more than a learning opportunity; it gives you quality time together doing something active and fun.
So on the fourth Thursday of the month, take your daughters and sons to work, and then bring them to the gym to workout!
For more information about the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Foundation, click   here.

Getting Older?
Your Muscles Don’t Have To!
Just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean your muscles have to get weaker and less efficient.
According to a recent article in the New York Times, ” To keep our muscles healthy deep into retirement, we may need to start working out more now, according to a new study of world-class octogenarian athletes. The study found substantial differences at a cellular level between the athletes’ muscles and those of less active people.”
